Meet our 2011 Officers

President: J. Michael Salley

I have lived in the Lowcountry for six years, moved here from Long Island, NY. Was born in the very bicycle friendly, New York City. My first bike was an English 3 Speed, that my Dad bought me. I joined Coastal Cyclists in 2005, served as the Membership Chair that year. I am also a member of PCC and the Summerville Cyclists and I serve on the board of the Summerville Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition. (http://summervillebike-ped.org/) I live and own a small business in Summerville, SC. I lead the Group IV riders in Summerville every weekend. In addition to my cycling activities, I work out at the local YMCA three mornings per week. I ride a TREK road bike.  I look forward to serving as President.

Vice President: Steve Rublee

Age 56 and feeling every year of it

BaldingBald

Married to Laura for 27 years.

2 sons

Moved to Charleston from Temple, Texas in October 2009.  Live on James Island.

Have been riding seriously (though not well) for 20+ years after getting too old and decrepit to play basketball.

Ride a (1) 2007 Trek Madone and (2) another 2007 Trek Madone.

In a good week, get in about 90 miles.

Have participated in 2 races, the Temple Corporate Challenge and the Tour de Gruene.

(Lance rode in the latter; unfortunately, it was the year after I did, so I missed him.  A 26-mile two-man time trial in a Texas town known far and wide for its beer hall, it was part of his comeback year leading up to his 2009 tour appearance.  He and John Korioth, from whom I bought bike number (2) above, absolutely slaughtered the field.)  (My friend, Billy, and I came in second in our division, by the way, which to this day I still believe was a timekeeping error.  Ain’t givin’ the mug back, though.)

(Former) Active member of the Bell County Bike Club, which was really a club in name only, more a bunch of people who liked to ride and later drink beer

Have organized a number of community events, e.g., kids’ helmet-fittings.

Created a fund-raiser bike tour, the Bloomin’ Temple Tour (http://www.templerotary.org/bloomintempletour.cfm), while in the Rotary Club of  Temple.

Secretary: Chuck Hassold

I have worked down in the Charleston area since 2003 and then moved to Mount Pleasant permanently in 2004 with my wife Mary. My daughter and son in-law live here, and my son just moved here after completing school in Columbia.

I started riding a bike 5 years ago after a series of knee surgeries due to a soccer injury. My first group ride was with Fred Herrman out of Sewee Out Post and it was a thrill. I then moved to the Saturday James Island ride and the Sunday Mount Pleasant ride. When I get the chance I still enjoy riding with these groups. The Coastal Cyclist sponsored rides taught me a lot about riding etiquette and helped improve my confidence when riding in groups.

I want to run for a position to get more involved. Even though I have been unable to attend the Monday monthly meetings, I stay connected through the web site and internet chat. I am excited about what Coastal Cyclist, along with other bicycle organizations, have done for the Charleston area cycling community. I know I could be a strong asset to keep the wheels rolling forward as part of such a strong movement. I hope I get the opportunity to serve as part of the Coastal Cyclist organization.
